It is also a lot of work. I\u2019m not looking for sympathy, and I do love sharing my home with so many pets, but I also don\u2019t want to ignore the harsh realities of living with animals, particularly, a lot of animals.<\/p>\n<p>Some people have completely unrealistic expectations of living with pets, and even go to cruel extremes like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catster.com\/ask-the-vet\/declawing-cats\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\">de-clawing their cats<\/a> to keep their furniture looking brand new.<\/p>\n<p>I have a couple of go-to phrases I like to trot out when talking to people about having pets (and I believe they also apply to having children!):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>An immaculate house or pets: pick one (you can\u2019t have both)<\/i>.<\/li>\n<li><i>If you don\u2019t feel a little bit mean some of the time, you\u2019re going to regret it later<\/i>\n<ul>\n<li>This one is particularly relevant to puppy training!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We do our best to keep our home clean and presentable; choosing furniture that won\u2019t easily show the effects of cat claws or absorb any doggy odors, investing in a couple of good quality vacuum cleaners, and we are currently in the process of replacing much of our carpet with hard flooring. Instead of fighting against the side-effects of pet ownership, we try to make choices and adjustments that make those side-effects less of a problem. But, some days it feels like a lot of work.<\/p>\n<p>Having recently returned from a visit from my petless parents, I found myself feeling a bit overwhelmed and resentful of the many time-consuming responsibilities that pet ownership involves, and I\u2019m sure I\u2019m not the only pet lover to have felt that way from time to time. This feeling of ennui has brought me to this week\u2019s topic on the harsh realities of living with pets, of which there are enough to have two parts!<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-youtube su-u-responsive-media-yes\"><iframe width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pGE3Ip6Tf4Y?\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture\" title=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2>Things You Need To Know About Life With Cats<\/h2>\n<p>There are a lot of different choices and arrangements you can make that will help minimize the downsides to living with cats, but if you think that life with cats will be low maintenance and smooth sailing, it\u2019s time for a reality check.<\/p>\n<h3>Hairballs and Vomiting Are Inevitable<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_632929\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-632929\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-632929 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Life-with-cats-is-life-with-Hairballs-Vomit._Dr-Karyn-800x509.jpg\" alt=\"Life with cats is life with Hairballs &amp; Vomit.\" width=\"800\" height=\"509\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Life-with-cats-is-life-with-Hairballs-Vomit._Dr-Karyn-800x509.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Life-with-cats-is-life-with-Hairballs-Vomit._Dr-Karyn-600x382.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Life-with-cats-is-life-with-Hairballs-Vomit._Dr-Karyn-768x488.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Life-with-cats-is-life-with-Hairballs-Vomit._Dr-Karyn-250x159.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Life-with-cats-is-life-with-Hairballs-Vomit._Dr-Karyn.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-632929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Life with cats is life with Hairballs &amp; Vomit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Regular brushing, choosing the right food, and using supplements can really help reduce the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catster.com\/felines-weekly\/whats-that-sound-the-feline-upchuck\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\">hairballs and associated vomiting<\/a> you\u2019ll find around the house, but unless you\u2019re living with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catster.com\/cat-health-care\/how-to-care-for-hairless-cats\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\">hairless breed<\/a>, you should accept that you will have the joy of dealing with the occasional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n8Y3Ikxp314&amp;list=PLG1ZLB_qDs-lROr8qbYae5qpi01394JXW&amp;index=9\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">feline upchuck<\/a>. Larger particles and litter mats can definitely help, but don\u2019t be surprised to find bits of litter scattered about the place. When I find little particles of cat litter on my bedspread and nightstand, I just pray that it\u2019s clean!<\/p>\n<h3>Cats Have Claws<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_632942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-632942\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-632942\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cyril-has-the-guilts-about-the-carpet-damage-but-Alex-couldnt-care-less_Dr-Karyn.jpg\" alt=\"Cyril has the guilts about the carpet damage, but Alex couldn't care less!\" width=\"800\" height=\"603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cyril-has-the-guilts-about-the-carpet-damage-but-Alex-couldnt-care-less_Dr-Karyn.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cyril-has-the-guilts-about-the-carpet-damage-but-Alex-couldnt-care-less_Dr-Karyn-600x452.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cyril-has-the-guilts-about-the-carpet-damage-but-Alex-couldnt-care-less_Dr-Karyn-800x603.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cyril-has-the-guilts-about-the-carpet-damage-but-Alex-couldnt-care-less_Dr-Karyn-768x579.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cyril-has-the-guilts-about-the-carpet-damage-but-Alex-couldnt-care-less_Dr-Karyn-250x188.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-632942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cyril has the guilts about the carpet damage, but Alex couldn&#8217;t care less!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And they will use them. Even if you provide scratching posts, cat trees, and feline furniture, there is a pretty good chance that your cat will flex those talons on your sofa, carpet, or clothing. Keeping their claws trimmed can help minimize the damage, but if you don\u2019t think you can handle a claw mark here or there, cats might not be the pet for you.<\/p>\n<p>Not only do our cats enjoy sharpening their claws on our carpets, they also maliciously seek to tear it up if they find themselves excluded from a room. If we need to shut them in my office, or lock them out of the bedroom, we know there\u2019ll be a patch of carpet bearing the marks of their protest. Hence, we are gradually transitioning to hard floors!<\/p>\n<h3>You Will Have Cat Hair on EVERYTHING<\/h3>\n<p>One thing I find really frustrating is when my clothes come out of the washing machine with <i>more<\/i> hair than they went in with. Even when it was just me and Clutch, I was constantly in search of the \u2018next big thing\u2019 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catster.com\/lifestyle\/how-to-get-rid-of-cat-hair-on-clothes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">combat pet hair on clothing<\/a>, furniture, and carpets. Multiply that by ten and you can probably imagine how hairy our lives are! Fortunately, the more negative aspects of living with pets are significantly outweighed by the positives, which is why my posts are usually of a more upbeat nature! How can I stay grumpy when I\u2019ve got the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nbqPei4D5po\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">vacuum-loving Clutch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogster.com\/doggos-weekly\/fred-is-broken\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">broken Fred<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catster.com\/felines-weekly\/working-from-home-with-a-demanding-cat\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\">inconvenient Cyril<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogster.com\/doggos-weekly\/kodah-addicted-to-the-hose\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">water-addict Kodah<\/a> to entertain me?
